Plain for flavored yogurt?

Should you use plain Greek yogurt or flavored yogurt? The type of yogurt you use depends on your tastes and goals because not all yogurts are equal in nutrition.

Greek yogurt differs from traditional yogurt because it is strained more times, removing some of the whey and lactose.

This gives Greek yogurt about twice as much protein as traditional yogurt and around half the carbs

Plain fat-free yogurt (regular or Greek) has the lowest amount of calories compared to flavored types. It has no saturated fat, no added sugars and no added food dyes.

Regular yogurt made with whole milk has the most saturated fat, followed by low-fat yogurt, followed by non-fat yogurt. Flavored yogurts also have the most carbohydrates.

Most flavored yogurts are high in added sugar. Sugar can be listed under many different names, including:

  • sucrose
  • high fructose corn syrup
  • fruit juice
  • cane sugar
  • agave nectar

If your kids tend to want sugary snacks or breakfasts, try letting them make their own fruit and yogurt parfait. Kids are more likely to eat a new food if they make it themselves. Even if they don’t gobble it down, just getting them to try something healthier is a great first step.

Are yogurt parfaits healthy?

Yogurt parfaits can be healthy depending on the type of yogurt you use. Stick to Greek yogurt that you can flavor up with fresh fruit and honey.

Can kids make yogurt parfaits on their own?

Kids can have fun making their own yogurt parfaits if you prepare the fruits ahead of time so they can add them over each yogurt layer.

Can you meal prep the parfaits?

You can make your yogurt parfaits ahead of time. They will last in the refrigerator for a day or two before the crunchy layer of granola becomes soft.

You can absolutely make a fruit and yogurt parfait in a bowl, glass or jar. But fun containers can help kids see a new food as special, and encourage them to try it.
