How to make guacamole without lime
Guacamole is one of my favorite “dips” to make. It falls second to my fresh homemade salsa.
It’s easy to make, only needs a handful of ingredients and is best dipped with tortilla chips or a healthy spread over your favorite quesadillas or chicken in a sandwich.
About avocados
Did you know avocados are actually a fruit? They are from the same family as cinnamon and bay laurel, where bay leaves come from.
There are benefits to eating avocados. Avocados are the source of key ingredients including healthy fats and fiber. They also are reported to help keep inflammation under control and shown to lower the risk of heart disease.
How to cut an avocado
The best way to cut it is by slicing around the length of the avocado and then twisting the halves to expose the seed.
To remove the seed, carefully hit the pit with you knife into the seed. Holding the knife in one hand and the avocado half in the other, gently twist the pit until it loosens. It should pop right out, still embedded in the blade of the knife.
Squeeze behind the seed to remove the seed from the knife blade.
You can also use a spoon to remove the seed.
Ingredient
Fresh avocado
Minced garlic
Onion – You can chop your favorite or whatever you have available (white onions, red onion or yellow onion)
Roma tomatoes
Fresh cilantro
Lemon – Are you a lemon or lime in guacamole kinda person? I know the traditional way uses lime, but I personally prefer guacamole with lemon
Salt – Add a smaller amount than you think you’ll want and then taste and adjust as needed
How to make guacamole without lime
Slice each avocado in half lengthwise, and carefully remove the pit. Score the avocado flesh in a grid pattern, and use a spoon to scoop it into a small bowl.
Mash the avocado with a fork or potato masher.
Add garlic, diced onion, tomatoes and chopped cilantro to the bowl
Mix well.
Use a lemon squeezer to add in lemon juice and mix. Or you can use apple cider vinegar (you probably have a bottle in your pantry).
Serve immediately.
How to store leftover guacamole
Guacamole is best served right away, as it tends to brown as it sits. Some people claim putting the avocado pit in an airtight container will keep it from browning in the refrigerator.
I’ve also found that a piece of plastic wrap pressed to the surface of the guacamole can minimize browning.
How to pick the perfect avocados?
Give it a gentle squeeze near the top by the stem and when you get a little give or softness
How do you ripen avocados that are hard?
Place the unripe avocados in a brown paper bag and seal it shutting it from getting outside air.
Should you use lemon or lime to make guacamole?
You can use lemon or lime. But if you have neither, some acidity from vinegar will work. The acid not only boosts the flavors of avocados but helps them from browning too.
