Standing under the bright lights on stage something covers me. I lose all sense of self and the confidence that I had hours earlier fades away for some crazy reason.
As soon as my foot hits the stage, my mind goes blank and confidence goes out the window. I can’t tell you what song is playing or what happens to my body. It is sort of like an out of body experience. Yet at the same time I am not completely present.
A great physique is irrelevant if you cannot display it properly
The ability to present your physique well onstage could be seen as one of the keys to competitive bodybuilding success. Posing the body well will basically give the judges what they are looking for: perfect presentation of your body under scrutiny.
The symmetry, muscularity, aesthetics and proportion are all assessed during the judging process. So, your ability to pose well should be high on the list regardless of the category: bodybuilding, men’s physique, women’s physique, classic physique, figure or bikini.
Some neglect it to their detriment.
When I I watched Pumping Iron on Netflix, they talked about Arnold taking ballet classes to help improve his fluidity. Pretty amazing when you think about it. It can be argued that a well crafted posing routine and a command of the compulsory poses will show the judges that an athlete is confident and in control.
So, it makes sense to perfect your posing and exude confidence if winning is the aim.
Posing in front of the mirror
I have spent a lot of time in my shoes this season. I’ve been working on building my confidence and studying my body.
I find myself in my shoes posing in front of the studio mirrors several days a week after cardio and on the weekends. During the week, I structure my cardio sessions and sauna time to finish just as the group fitness classes are finishing up in order to get in front of the mirror.
I thought I had built my confidence up over the past few weeks from show to show. I mean it was high until minutes before I stepped on the NPC Victory Classic stage. However, for the next few weeks my goal is to work on me. Confidence comes not just from standing in the shoes but from internally. It’s my goal to work on that while finding my confidence in my shoes.
Record and study it
Take your phone out and record yourself. You can only see so much of yourself by just posing in front of the mirror.
I will admit that I cringe most of the time. I see flaws all the time. I have improved but I can see I need to twist more, stand taller and of course smile. It’s crazy what you can see when you record yourself. So, do it. Your naked eye can only see so much.
How do you build your confidence?
