A book and a glass of wine

I have several mini goals this year including reading more books. My hope is to read at least six books this year. And I mean hold the book in my hands, read the book. I like audiobooks and use things like Audible, but I like the feeling of holding a book in my hands and flipping the pages.

Sitting back and reading a book

I think it might be as some think newspapers. Or at least a few years ago when a printed newspaper meatier. I know people who were adamant about holding it in their hands as opposed to reading it online.

First book of the year

we're going to need more wine by gabrielle union

I recently finished We’re Going To Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union.

I bought the week more than a month ago after hearing Gabrielle Union on a Death Sex and Money podcast. I was intrigued by her story, which I knew very little about. Call me out if you must or feel the need. I do remember her in the Bring It On, Bad Boys II and Deliver Us From Eva. And I am an avid watcher of Being Mary Jane. But I really don’t recall and had no idea about many of her other roles in her career let alone the stories she shared.

I also will admit that I do not really delve into the “lives” of actors and actresses. Forget me watching Entertainment Tonight or being click baited into something on my Facebook timeline to learn why or how someone is doing this or that.

With that being said, she tells stories that wants you to open up a bottle of wine and get to flipping page after page – personal, honest, cringe-worthy and realistic. A couple of the things she shares that really stick with me are later in the book involving Dwayne Wade and their family. Let me say this without ruining your opportunity to read the book; it’s a shame that we live in a time where we have to continue to be fearful for our black sons walking in our own neighborhoods. One other thing is that you can see how many aspects of her life that she has allowed us to enter are story lines or parts of story lines in Being Mary Jane.

I recommend picking up the book. I bought mine at Target, but you can buy it lots of places. A friend of mine says Gabrielle Union narrates the book so you can listen to it on your phone or in your car.

Other books to dive into

My next book I plan on picking up is This Is Just My Face: Try Not to Stare by Gabourey Sidibe. I really don’t have rhyme or reason on this book. I have seen it on the shelves at Target and plan on picking it up in the next week or so. I really only know her for her role in Precious and of course, now, Empire.

Reading Year of Yes gave me new insights

I read Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes. Year of Yes is my favorite book in a long time.

I read it during my last prep. I took it everywhere with me and read a lot while I was sitting in the sauna. The book is actually falling apart now.

Anyhow, Year of Yes is awesome in so many different ways.

Expanding the world

Reading helps me think about life, goals and how to better myself.

Plus, it helps me wind and quiet down. There are no electronics involved so I am not sucked into the vortex of flipping between apps on my phone or iPad. I need to carve out more time to read but sometimes it feels like there are not enough hours in the day from work, working out, meal prepping and quiet time. Seriously.

I’m hoping to continue to expand my world and diversify the authors that I read. Right now it’s sort of autobiography like books I am reading. I don’t mind at all. But I am open to expanding the types of authors and genre.

I love to read and one of my goals this year is to read more too! I like to read a lot of “beach” reads or YA novels and they are usually easier to get through, so my goal is 18 in 2018…we’ll see if I make it. I should really read Year of Yes though. My default is no and that closes off a lot of opportunities sometimes…and drives my boyfriend crazy.

I much prefer to read an actual book myself also. I wish I could find more time in the day for reading.
